Very often, downloading text or multimedia files from the Internet, you can see that this information is stored in the .rar format. In order to open saved documents on your Mac, you need to extract the RAR files to their original appearance first.
What is the Difference Between ZIP and RAR
RAR file – a Roshal Archive Compressed file – is one of the universal formats for collection data widely used in the web for fast transfer and sharing the information. Users apply compression to decrease general data size and merge documents and folders into one. The resulting RAR file takes up little space and can be easily sent via e-mail or through the other sharing options.
Like the other archive files – for example, ZIP-files – the .rar format is a container for storing information. After downloading, to use the documents on the gadget, all the information must be released.
Using RAR-files as an alternative to the usual ZIP has some advantages. For example, the first format has strong AES-128 paraphrase and higher compression quota. Thus, many people and experts choose the RAR files over the other techniques.
How to Open RAR Files on Mac without Downloading Software?
The short answer is – in no way.
Although your Mac supports ZIP format by default, RAR files demand third-party software to unlock its contents. The reason is that Apple OS X and macOS do not include the inherent archive instrument that unlocks the squeezed data.
How to Use the Unarchiver
Many options can help us undo the compression of information. Let’s find out how to release RAR files with Unarchiver. The application can be found in the Mac App Store utility section.

The Unarchiver also has an assistant application called Archives, and can be found in the App Store ‘iDevices section’. It opens most archived files, very useful for those who work with mostly online and exchange data by email or use other data-transferring methods.
Step 1. Save and install Unarchiver
This can be done through the Mac App Store or the Unarchiver website. It is important to know that the Apple set some limits and the requirements for the sandbox in its online shop.
The least number of system requirements for the program – is Mac OS X 10.7. But for older Macs keepers, there is a version available on the Unarchiver website.
Step 2. Unlock your file
To do this, simply drag your RAR file to the Unarchiver icon on the desired folder, choose Open With – Unarchiver OR – double-click the needed one.
Unarchiver extracts compressed files to the same folder.
Use these files like any other data.

In addition, the firewall can influence the Unarchiver this way. Make sure that you allow access to the program, acquiescing it to receive incoming connections.
- Open System Preferences – Security / Security & Privacy – Firewall;
- Click the lock icon on the lower-left window and enter the administrator name and password on demand;
